July 16-22, 2001 - Maurice's Trip to Charles' & Elsie's

Maurice left Hays on Tuesday afternoon, July 22nd to pull the travel trailer to Williams, MN - a mere 10 or 15 miles from the Canadian border. When he left Hays, the thermometer was reading 105 degrees! Since he was pulling a heavy load, he knew that he could not use the a/c in the pickup as it would almost certainly overheat. He had a thermometer with him and it registered that the heat coming off the engine and off the highway raised the temperature in the cab of the pickup to 113 degrees! As he traveled east across Nebraska and night began to fall, it almost seemed cold by the time the sun went down (only 98 degrees in the cab by now), so he decided to drive most of the night. He arrived in Le Mars, Iowa which claimed to be the ice cream capital of the world (Blue Bunny, etc.) and found a neat little city campground situated by a small fishing lake. After about 3 1/2 hours of sleep, he got on the road again before the heat started up.

Maurice arrived in Williams on Wednesday afternoon, 26.5 hours after leaving Hays. Williams is where Charles's cabin "in the North Woods" is located. Charles was there spreading a load of gravel, that had just been delivered about an hour prior for a spot to park the camper. Shortly after they got the trailer parked on the gravel, a severe storm hit the area. Luckily, there was no damage at Charles' house, but a tornado and hail the size of baseballs passed over the Lake of the Woods less than 10 miles north.
