Ruey Carmen Witten

"My mother was a remarkable woman. She had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. She worked hard all of her life. Her father was a mean, tyrannical man who made her work like a man when she was 8 years old.

She was a mother during the depression and held us together with her indomitable spirit and love. We were very poor but her wonderful disposition never left her. She was not a person of moods. She looked at the world with a calm disposition and took great joy in little things. She was a reader and I have a lifelong love of reading that I know has kept me sane in spite of the hard times that I have had.

Her own mother died when she was 16 and she must have been an outstanding person, also to have had an influence on my mother."
